I don't want this particular thread to turn into a debate on defense spending. I like the discussions to stick to the themes of each post. Let me quickly address this, though, since I've done some research on this recently.

Nanotech experts at the U.S. Department of Defense believe that the DoD is spending enough money to support all their nanotech programs, nanomaterials included, because of cross-fertilization by the other federal agencies participating in the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI).

However, the experts say, as nanotech makes the transition from basic research to applications, the DoD is going to have to kick in some more dough -- especially in nanomaterials, nanodevices and nanosystems. More money (and more focused money) also needs to go into Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) and similar types of grants if all this wonderful research is going to make it out of the lab and into the field protecting our soldiers (like my brother in Iraq).

So, in other words, there's no shortage of money going into defense nanomaterials research right now, but there could be a problem in a few years.

Thank you. I did not want to be specifically anonymous, but I do not want to antagonize anyone. (I may have to do just that in the near future.) I just wanted to bring to light the dangers of the U. S' not paying enough attention (dollars, that is) to "nano" (primarily nanomaterials, initially anyway) research & development. What do you think?
